Population Growth : The population of the Philippines ranks as the world's twelfth most populous nation with its population having passed the 94million mark by mid 2011.
Urbanisation : 49% of the population reside in urban areas. This is expected to increase 2.3% per year through 2015.
Climate : Weather ralted disasters are not new to the Philippines. Long dry spells causing draughts that lead to dry faucets and increased rationing of piped water. Competition arises betwen privately delivered water and over-the-counter purchased bottled water. On the other hand tropical cyclones flooding and landslides and also affect water quality and accessibility.
All of these create water insecurity, throughout the population, because people do not have sufficient water for an ective and healthy lifestyle. The World Bank stated that about one of every five Filipinos has no direct access to clean water, a figure that is actually worse today than in the 1990s because the development of supply infrastructure has lagged behind population growth. Based on estimates, the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 needs PhP25 billion per year over ten years for the completion of physical infrastructure. These large funding needs were recently confirmed by an Asian Development Bank study which estimates that approximately US$95 billion will be needed from 2008 to 2025 to satisfy urban infrastructure requirements in the Philippines. This will include US$5.7 billion for water supply and US$13 billion for sanitation.
A rising demand for potable water, sewerage and sanitation services by households and communities, in addition to wastewater treatment facilities for industries and commercial establishments, is urgent. Also required is agricultural irrigation and the necessary infrastucture. Water Philippines 2013 is perfectly timed to provide this technology. |
